Eu quero fazer um post sobre a migração do macOS para o Debian no meu MacBook, que não recebe mais atualizações de sistema operacional da Apple.

Enquanto isso não acontece, queria documentar aqui uma descoberta boba que fiz que melhorou os meus dias: eu comecei a usar o Thunderbird nesse laptop para acessar meu calendário, contatos e emails do iCloud, e minha vida mudou.

Além de email e calendário, o Thunderbird vem com leitor RSS integrado, e eu acho que vou começar a usar ele em todos os meus computadores. É um aplicativo especial demais, da época que eles eram feitos para facilitar nossas vidas e tornar coisas chatas em algo divertido de se fazer.

Nesse último mês eu mudei a página inicial do meu navegador para exibir a capa da Wikipédia ao invés do campo de busca em uma nova aba.

Isso tem mudado um monte o meu humor de manhã, quando eu abro o meu laptop para começar a trabalhar ou a escrever. Ao invés de ir direto ao ponto, eu perco um tempinho passeando por algumas curiosidades do mundo. Hoje, por exemplo, eu li sobre essa estação de trem em Belgrave.

We have just entered an absolutely wild new era of internet misinformation and the shit hasn't visibly hit the fan yet but it WILL.

It's quite simple:

  • Wikipedia has become the definitive online source of information to the point that other fairly reputable websites often cite or copy it. Do you have any idea the psychological whiplash of clicking "Info" on iNaturalist for a plant, and being confronted with text that YOU WROTE
  • The internet as a whole is being used as training data for AI bots, which are in turn used to generate online content.
  • Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, meaning it is supposed to summarize information that's already out there, NOT synthesize new conclusions. In my experience, Wikipedia is alright about labeling and eliminating unsupported statements, but not so good at pinning down and excising bad or disreputable sources, which can stick around for years. To make matters worse, reputable sources are often paywalled.

It is pretty funny though that anything can manifest "sources" relating to it and become increasingly legitimized just by being discussed on the internet. I have seen so many bot-generated websites advertising and discussing lawn alternatives pop up in searches relating to the topic.

Nos últimos anos eu tinha uma extensão obrigatória para o meu Firefox: Nook, que toca a trilha-sonora dos jogos Animal Crossing de acordo com o horário. Se fosse 17h, eu podia escolher ouvir as músicas de fundo bem relaxantes (e um tanto melancólicas) de New Leaf ou de New Horizons para esse horário.

Com a atualização nas diretrizes de extensões do Google Chrome, a extensão vai deixar de existir. Como o Firefox decidiu seguir o mesmo formato de extensões do Chrome há alguns anos, isso significa que a mesma extensão também vai deixar de funcionar no navegador.

Ainda bem que mn6 decidiu continuar o Nook como um aplicativo para computadores. Tem versões para Windows, macOS e Linux. É um aplicativo que faz uma coisa e a faz muito bem (o melhor tipo de aplicativo).
